Share your Top ICT Tips

What are your top ICT tips?

My favourite include:

Using the  F11 key when viewing webpage on the interactive whiteboard. It throws back all the navigation buttons and address bar so that you maximise the view of the webpage.

Using the Print Screen key "PrtSc" on the top right of a keyboard. It captures the screen you are working on. Useful for capturing webpages or a document which has frozen.

How to use the Print Screen key "PrtSc"
Press the key and then go into your IWB software, Textease, Word, PowerPoint ... and click Paste to drop the screen captured image.

Did you know that Google can calculate the time in different parts of the world?

Type ‘time’ followed by the name of the city into search. e.g. time New York and hit search.

To start writing any where on a Word Document, just double click on the page where you want to type.

Works for placing images too. (Double click and then add image)

To close a frozen programme or to close a programme  press Alt and F4. It will end any programme immediately.

Please take note that using this function WILL NOT SAVE your work. It will just shut down the application.

My favourite keyboard shortcut is hold ALT and then tap TAB to quickly switch between active programs on the task bar. You can have loads of windows open, and just switch quickly between them, without having to use the mouse on the taskbar - AND you can even set the taskbar to hide or not remain on top, and give yourself an extra few centimetres of screen space. This trick is EXTREMELY useful if you are using CTRL+C to copy from one window, and then CTRL+V to paste on another.

By the way, if you hold ALT PrtScr, then you get a snapshot of just the currently active window, rather than the whole screen sent to the clipboard.
Paste your results into PAINT and crop them to get just the bit you want, then COPY and PASTE back into your IWB software or Word to get just the part of the screen that you need.

Did you know that Clicking on an image in your web browser, and then dragging it to an open program on your task bar, copies the image into the document?

When copying and pasting text into word, you often find the formatting (font and size etc.) gets all messed up, especially when copy and pasting from websites.

To fix this, place the cursor in the middle or a word that has the desired formatting, then click on the 'Format Painter' tool (which looks like a paintbrush). Next, click and drag around the text that needs to be reformatted. The Format Painter will change all  the stylistic attributes of that text, making it match the text you originally selected.

To increase / decrease the size of text within a Word document, highlight the text then whilst holding down the Control & Shift keys press < to decrease and > to increase the font size.

If you're trying to close down lots of PCs in the ICT suite. I find it really helpful to walk round pressing Alt and F4. It closes one program and when they are all closed press again to shutdown. Saves tinkering with the mouse.

If you're trying to find out whether the children have saved their work recently many programs will show an asterix in the top bar (technical term) when unsaved changes have been made. Great for a busy classroom.

Although it's simple, I'm always amazed at how useful children seem to find learning CTRL + Z/Y for undoing/redoing changes - especially if they have a lot of things they need to undo/redo and don't want to keep clicking the icon with the mouse.

Worth remembering that in Vista you can get a screen capture using the Clipping Tool. Its quite useful.  Start/All Programs/Accessories/Clipping Tool......
