Hi Do you need something to get the summer term off to a good start for your Year 7 or 8 students? How about taking part in "Alien Visit", a problem-solving videoconference day for 11-13 year-olds on 28 April,10.00-15.00 (cost £195). We will cover a range of mathematical topics, including using maps and coordinates, scale drawing and timelines, as well as shape and number based problems. This day is intended to be suitable for any ability class, including mixed ability classes or lower achievers. More information: http://motivate.maths.org/content/alienvisit We also have other sessions coming up in the summer term: * "Coding and Languages", 13-15 year-olds, looking at links between mathematical codes and languages, with mathematical techniques used to analyse different languages, on 23 April, 10.00-15.00 (COST £195). See http://motivate.maths.org/content/coding-languages * "With the right strategy I can always win", 12-14 year-olds, 15 July,10.00-12.00 (cost £85), in which we will analyse games which do not result on change, but are purely strategy games. Hi I've just added a new VC session to our conference programme for the summerterm: "With the right strategy I can always win ...", for 12-14 year-old students, 10.00-12.00, on 15 July. The cost is £85 for up to 40 students (more pro rata). In this enrichment session, we will analyse Nim-like games to see if we can work out (a) what makes you lose, and (b) how to avoid it. This is an opportunity to develop mathematical thinking by playing games between local and remote participants and working out what went right or went wrong with the strategy used. More information: http://motivate.maths.org/content/Nim We also have two other day conferences for secondary students: "Coding and Languages", for 13-15 year-old students, looking at the maths that underlies coding and which can be also applied to our study of language. More information: http://motivate.maths.org/content/coding-languages "Alien Visit", for 11-13 year-old students, using a story about a potential alien visit for a variety of problem-solving activities. This would be appropriate for lower ability sets, but we will accommodate all ability levels. More information: https://motivate.maths.org/content/alienvisit(link now repaired, if you've tried to visit this page already and found the link didn't work). We can also offer a range of enrichment sessions for any age group for your school or group of schools. More information: https://motivate.maths.org/content/mathsenrichment For more information, or to discuss any of these further, please email us at motivate@maths.org. Hi I've just added a new VC session to our conference programme for the summerterm: "Was Goliath really a giant?", for 7-9 year-old children, 10.00-12.00, on 15 July. The cost is £45 for up to 40 students (more pro rata). In this enrichment session, we will find out about traditional units of length which relate to parts of the body, and use practical activity to decide whether we think Goliath really was a giant or not! Moreinformation: https://motivate.maths.org/content/Goliath We also have two other conferences for primary children: "Is there anyone out there?" This is a 2-VC conference for 9-11 year-olds. We already have a group of three South African primary schools signed up for this conference, so as well as finding out about how astronomers find new planets outside our solar system, and thinking about whether there might be life there, this is an opportunity to spend a day with children in a totally different country. More information: https://motivate.maths.org/content/life "Evrything you ever wanted to know about the universe", a 2-hour enrichment session for KS2 (8-11 year-olds). This session will be a mix of answering children's questions about space and the universe and practical activities which will help them to understand more about how the universe works. Moreinformation: https://motivate.maths.org/content/universe We can also offer a range of enrichment sessions for any age group for your school or group of schools. Hi We have a conference on "Secret Codes" planned for 15 Jan and Feb 9, with the two VCs starting at 10.30, and lasting for between 1 and 1 1/4 hours. At the moment, I have advertised it for 11-13 year-olds, but the school which has signed up to participate are going to involve their Y6 children, and so I'm now opening it up to Y6 as well as Y7. For more details, see http://motivate.maths.org/content/enigma This is an exciting topic, which gives children an insight into a real-world application of maths. It will be led by James Grime, who now leads the Enigma Project. If you can't get James to come to your school to lead a day, then this is an alternative. As well as talking about codes, and leading the children in a variety of short activities during the first VC, he will also demonstrate a real WWII enigma machine. There will be follow-up activities on our website for the children to do. The second VC will be for them to give a short presentation on what they have done, hear what others have done, and to discuss their work with other schools. James will also engage them in discussion of their work. To book a place, please use the Schools Registration Form at http://motivate.maths.org/content/bookvc if you haven't registered with us since September, and then use the booking form http://motivate.maths.org/content/node/116, Booking a scheduled conference, to book a place. Hello, The Natural History Museum have asked me to help them to find schools in the South East who may be able to take part in an evaluation of their online materials, and visit the new Darwin Centre Cocoon in Spring 2010. They looking for schools with VC to help evaluate the ‘Day in the Life of a Scientist’ online resources: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/education/online-resources/a-day-in-the-life/index.htmlThe NHM need schools, ideally in the South East, with pupils in Key Stages 3, 4 or 5.· They would like to visit the schools in person to observe pre-visit teaching.· They would observe the school during the Darwin Centre Cocoon visit.· They would like to observe the post-visit presentations via VC and ask pupils their opinions. The NHM want this to be a mutually beneficial process and will aim to support the volunteering teachers through this process. Do you have any schools who might be interested in taking part in the NHM evaluations and in visiting the New Darwin Centre in Spring 2010? Unfortunately, the NHM cannot fund the visits but, as I’m sure you are aware, the Museum has free entry. If you think you can help to find schools for this project then please get in touch with Grace Kimble, Schools Programme Developer at the NHM, g.kimble@nhm.ac.uk, 020 7942 6006. Dear Janet Videoconferencers! If you are a teacher at a UK school (primary, secondary or special or FE) and you enjoy using video or web-conferencing in the classroom... please read on.You can use VC or web-conferencing to make a link with a partner school in order to see into another classroom... perhaps to bring language learning to life, discuss global citizenship, share different viewpoints about a piece of literature or art... or share the celebration of a festival such as Christmas, Eid-ul-Adha, Chinese New Year... then please email partnerfinding@globalgateway.org to receive a suggested partner school. It will help if you have registered your school at http://www.globalgateway.org/register We have suitable schools in France, Germany, Middle East, East Asia and USA who would like to videoconference with you. You will need to register yourself and your school before you can use the new online booking system, even if you've done hundreds of VCs with us in the past. The purpose of this is so that you only have to enter your school details once (and update them as necessary). Then when you want to book something, use the appropriate form. These are all linked from the 'Booking a VC' tab, at http://motivate.maths.org/content/bookvc.
Any problems or comments, or anything you think should be there, but isn't, please let us know. I apologise in advance for any teething troubles - I've tried to test everything out, but I know from experience that user testing is always far more rigorous!
Regards
Jenny

There is going to be a power outage at EIS on Wednesday 19th August whilst EDF upgrade the local substation. This means that all non-essential equipment will lose power for the entire day.
The Video Conferencing Equipment will also be turned off during this period unless there are any scheduled conferences for this day.
Please let Steve James or Adam Page at EIS know as soon as possible if you have planned any conferences for this day.

Dear Colleagues,
The Met Office have just announced a series of free
videoconference sessions for schools and colleges in England. The conferences
are available during November, January and February of the new 2009/2010
academic year. The Met Office videoconferences have proved extremely popular in
the past, so early booking is advised to avoid disappointment. Please visit the
Met Office web site for more details and to reserve a session.
Met Office Videoconferences : www.metoffice.gov.uk/education/teachers/video_conferencing.html
The Met Office will be using the JANET Videoconferencing
Service (JVCS) to manage the conferences, and any school or college must first
be registered with JVCS in order to take part.

Dear all
The JANET Videotechnology Advisory Service (VTAS) has just published an updated version of the document "Introduction to Videoconferencing", written by our technical editor Paul Down. It provides a basic introduction to videoconferencing for potential users, particularly those working in schools.
It is available here:
www.ja.net/services/video/vtas/factsheetsuserguides
If you know of any new or potential users of videoconferencing, who are unsure of the technology, they may find this document helpful.

Hi
In the initial information we put on our website for our long project on "The Risks of Life" (full details at
http://motivate.maths.org/clusters/2009-10/cluster_homepage2009-10.shtml#risk)
we said that schools would need to hire or purchase a voting system for use during VCs.
We have now had a rethink, and instead of using one particular voting system, we are going to use a method of application sharing with Excel. If you have a voting system already, you will be able to use that for students to respond to questions in your classroom, then use the application sharing to communicate responses to us. If you don't, you can just use a show of hands or mini-whiteboards. This way, no one needs to get new equipment, but we can still have a rapid communication of responses between all the schools and us.
So what this means is that for this long project, the cost will be just the
£1395 for the year (if you book by 1 June, £1550 thereafter), and the only equipment you will need is a computer with internet connection in the classroom. We hope this will make this long project accessible to a wider range of schools.
We would also like to remind you about the other two long projects we are
offering: "Reality Maths" and "It's not that I'm smart ...". Full details are at http://motivate.maths.org/clusters/2009-10/cluster_homepage2009-10.shtml#top.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us.
Regards
Jenny

Hi
Our conference on Energy will address maths and science topics, and would be a great opportunity for cross-curricular work with geography as well:
VCs are on 4 June and 7 July, both starting at 13.15 and lasting for about
1 1/4 hours. This is aimed at 13-15 year-old students, and the cost is £180 for up to 40 students.
To see the range of issues we will consider, go to
http://motivate.maths.org/conferences/conference.php?conf_id=189
This is a topic of crucial concern to us all. If you would like to participate, sign up at http://motivate.maths.org/getinvolved/getinvolved.php.
Regards
Jenny

National Poetry Day Videoconference - October 8th 2009 www.poetryday.lgfl.net
After the huge success of last year's event, London Grid for Learning (LGfL) are once again partnering with Havering Local Authority and would like to invite you to take part in this year's National Poetry Competition and VC event. The theme for this year’s National Poetry Day is `All about Europe`, since the event will include videoconferencing with schools in Finland, Spain and France.
Poetry Competition
In order to celebrate this, LGfL would like to invite children to write poems about Europe. LGfL are delighted that poets Michael Rosen, John Hegley and Paul Cookson have been secured to judge the finalists and perform during the VC event. Visit the link below to read about the prizes and rules.
Videoconference Event
LGfL would also like to invite your school to take part in a videoconference for primary and secondary schools during National Poetry Day, October 8th 2009, hosted from Crownfield Junior School, starting at 8.50 am and ending at 3.10pm.
Please visit www.poetryday.lgfl.net to see the programme for the day and to find out how you can register to take part.

I had a very interesting meeting with Tandberg last week. They are keen to increase their market share in the Education sector so it may well be worth checking out Tandberg if you are considering purchasing a new endpoint - they are promising good educational pricing on their products.
Something like the
Edge 85 would be suitable for whole classroom use.
They also showed us a
High Def USB webcam developed in conjunction with Microsoft which looked really cool and suitable for use with H.323 software codecs and Microsoft
OCS as used by the
Kent Learning Zone.
